The Great 2014 Four Year Memorial Hip Replacement Backgammon Tournament And New Year Celebration 01/11/14

On Saturday Jan 11 Sue and I held The Great 2014 Four Year Memorial Hip Replacement Backgammon Tournament And New Year Celebration. It had been so deeply foggy all day, that we were concerned that the evening's dropping temperatures would ice up the roads too badly for folks to come over. Though slow going for a few, it was manageable, but everyone had to be careful for sure!

For dinner I was going to fix a spicy chicken wing recipe but got legs instead. And then, at the last minute, decided I didn't like that recipe so I ended up totally winging it. I seasoned the legs in virgin olive oil, thyme, chili powder, red pepper, basil, and garlic powder. After rolling them in flour, I baked them in a 525 degree oven for about 30 minutes until the skins got crispy. I splashed them with red wine, sealed them in aluminum foil, and baked them at 350 degrees for about 45 minutes.

Along with the legs, I baked garlic, chive, pepper, cilantro, and basil seasoned mashed potatoes that Sue made. Everything came out spectacular, though we didn't get around to eating until late this time, almost 8:00 because the legs took longer to cook with the mashed potatoes in there. But this gave both Sue and I time to play quite a bit of backgammon.

Because the Patriots were playing that night, a couple of folks missed that party, opting for dogs and chips in front of their TVs. Even Tony left after dinner, missing a pretty good 2013 action movie, Elysium, to run home to support them. Which probably wasn't necessary because the Pats absolutely pounded the Colts. Steve stayed for a few minutes after everyone else headed out around 11:00pm and caught a few minutes of the last 15 minutes of the 4th quarter and they were over 20 points up at that point.
