Marissa and Gary Wedding 06/11/11

Marissa and Gary had their big wedding day Saturday June 11th on the Sagamore Creek at the Portsmouth Elks. It was a good thing at Friday night's rehearsal that we had planned for both an outside ceremony as well as inside one in case of rain because it poured most of the day. But that was okay.

It was a wonderful ceremony conducted by my brother Alan who is a Catholic Deacon. Sue and I had picked Alan up at the Manchester, NH airport Friday night in time to get back to Portsmouth for the rehearsal. After the rehearsal, we all went up to Dover to Blue Latitudes restaurant for a buffet dinner, some nice wine, and great conversation!

We were all pretty wound up even though it was late when we got back to the condo, so we lit some candles and sat out on the deck until we decided we'd better fold up the tent and head off to bed.

I had hired a limo to pick the groomsmen up at 9:30am, and then run back to Dover pick up Marissa and the bride's maids and make sure they got to the site around 11:20am as the wedding was 11:30am.

Sue, Alan, and I drove down and got there about 10:45am in plenty of time before Marissa arrived. Wasn't much for the father of the bride to do but stand around looking regal and ready to go, but the time flew past. Though it wasn't raining too hard when I got there, by the time 11:15 rolled around, it was coming down pretty good, and I got pretty soaked walking out to the limo to walk Marissa in, fortunately under the umbrella of the limo driver.

The wedding itself was beautiful and dad was almost brought to tears reading the two pieces I had chosen to read at the ceremony. And as if getting married wasn't enough to flatten Gary, the best man and Marissa had cooked up a major plot to surprise Gary. It turns out that Sig Hansen of the Discovery Channel's Deadliest Catch fame and his crew were performing down at the Hampton Beach Casino that evening. Knowing this, they called Hansen's publicist to see if he made special appearances, explaining that life and the world stopped for Gary when Deadliest Catch was on and that he was such a fan. To their joy, Hansen said that he'd love to come up to the wedding!

So, when they knew Hansen had arrived at the wedding (not until about 3:30pm), they took Gary over to the side and put him in a chair facing the wall with everyone surrounding him. The best man, Ricky, told Gary that he knew Gary would have gone down to see Sig Hansen were it not that this was his wedding day. So, they did the next best thing, he said, and had gotten Gary a framed autographed picture of Sig for him.

In the excitement of being presented with the photograph, Gary never saw the guys leading Sig into the room behind him. Sig laid his hand on Gary's shoulder as Gary stared at the picture and thanked everyone for a great gift. And at that point, Sig rousted him so soundly that he almost knocked him out of the chair and said, "Well, how about me?" The pictures of this will tell the story just fine.... Gary did manage to catch his breath and it was a mob scene after that. Quite an end to a wonderful day.
