Trip To See Alan 04/14/11

Thursday the 14th, Sue and I flew down to Towson, MD to see my brother Alan and his wife Abbie. We got in early enough that we were able to have a late lunch and relax on the porch to practice some of my brother's Southern Porch Sitting techniques.

While porch sitting, we all agreed on a dinner menu from a book on Greek food, and then Alan, Sue, and I headed off food shopping. I made a terrific Greek dish: Moschari Sofrito - Veal Stew with Garlic, Parsley, and Vinegar. Outstanding meal! And, we got some fairly nice Greek white wine while out shopping, though nothing to jump up and down about.

Friday, we just relaxed around the house and did some reading. Later that afternoon, though, we took Alan and Abbie down to Baltimore to see Cirque du Soleil's performance of Totem. After the show, Alan took us to dinner at The Helmand, an Afgan restaurant in Baltimore run by the brother of Hamid Karzai, President of Afghanistan. Movie of the night was Arranged, a cute little indy film.

Saturday was almost a tornado with downpours of rain. But, it was a great day to tour the Baltimore Museum of Art. Sue had wanted to see their current exhibition: Seeing Now: Photography Since 1960. Though interesting, neither of us saw much of what we would call photographic art. Rather, it was simply a chronicle of the times rather than doing anything artist in the presentation.

Alan had dropped us off at the museum, and when he picked us up, we stopped off at a speciality food store Eddie's to shop for dinner.

During the day, we had selected a Spanish beef stew recipe that looked marvelous. We had known Thursday that we would do Greek that day and then Spanish on Saturday so we had shopped for both Greek and Spanish wines then. Unfortunately, the Spanish wines - both of them - sucked. And that's putting it mildly. How disappointing. Oh, well....

And we ended off the evening, after a couple of mis-starts, with the movie My Cousin Vinnie. Sue and I were so tired, though, that we had only got half way through. Sue hadn't seen it before, so at some point we'll have to do that one again.

We flew out of Baltimore Sunday afternoon on an 1:20p Southwest flight and were back home by just after 4:00pm. Neither Sue or I were up for much of anything as we were both pretty tired. We ate a meal out of stock, watched a little tv and went to bed.

Success! Menues planned. Problems of the world solved. Ahhhhhhhh.... Life is good.

Sue got this terrific shot on the way out shopping Friday morning.

Another shot Friday morning. This of the front of the house. It's the original farm house that has been in Abbie's family for a couple of generations. It used to be all farm land surrounding here, even with only dirt road access. Now, there are multi-million dollar homes all around the area. Just beautiful.

Eager to enter, the pursed lip comment was, "Take the shot. Take-the-shot!"

Tables turned! "Take-the-shot!"

Contemplating the forces of Nature.... Sure. Sure....

A cast of Rodin's 1902 bronze and marble sculpture The Thinker at BMA seems to indicate real contemplation of Nature.
