Concord Day Trip 12/06/19

After walking Beau, Sue and I headed off Friday 12/06/19 for a day trip to Concord, NH, and grabbed a Christmas Tree on the way back home.

We had to stop along Route 28 to pick up coffee for the trip. Sue was able to get a pumpkin spice, but I kept with my usual medium hot with a couple of creams. Traffic wasn't bad at all, and it was probably under a half hour more to our first stop at the Concord Mall.

We were amazed at how many vacant store fronts there were. And nothing at the food court. The place is just barren, for lack of a better description. It's just got to be really tough on the businesses that are there because the foot traffic is so low.

We went into a couple of places, but Sue's focus was on Penney's. She found a few really nice sweaters, which was great because that way I could buy her things that she wanted for Christmas rather than socks, or a book on Tibetan Yak Butter Tea...

We parked along Main Street downtown, and walked around visiting a few of the shops. We hadn't been to Concord in quite awhile, and thought some of the things that we were looking to pick up locally, we could do that in Concord. It was really pretty. Not only were there holiday decorations around, but it was actually snowing! How great is that!

Unfortunately, due to the rather blase attitude of the staff at almost every store we went into, we only bought things at one place. But even there, though the owner was friendly, we had to ask all the questions, and pull information from her.

One place was so bad, the duffas guy at the counter couldn't even be bothered to look up from his cell phone to acknowledge us coming in the door, or as we wandered down one of the aisles toward him. We walked out the door about a minute later. The only place we felt the staff was interested in having us there was The Works Cafe where we had a really good lunch.

It was snowing lightly as we drove toward home on Route 28. Just outside of Barnstead, NH we stopped at the Neva Dun Farm to pick up some wreaths, and a Christmas tree. We had been here before to cut our own tree, and the owner Ken recognized us. We all had a great chat as the snow fell gently around us.

It was such a pretty drive over the back roads as we left Neva Dun Farm. The snow was coming down just hard enough to have the intermittent wipers working. As we climbed gradually up the mountain, the roads began to get a little frosted, and I had to slow way down.

But that wasn't quite enough.... As we came into a gentle bend in the road, the car just wasn't going to turn. It started to broad slide just a little, and so I kept the wheels straight so we'd just drive onto a side road just off the bend.

It took awhile to get the car to stop as it was really frosted. I couldn't go forward to turn around as there was a fairly steep downward hill in front of us. And when I tried to back up, the all season radials on Sue's car just spun.

I put her in low gear — the car that is — and just sort of eased it back up the gentle incline back onto the main road we had skidded off of. Lucky we didn't get stuck down there as it would have been quite awhile to get a tow truck out to where we were.

When we got home, I just pulled the tree off the roof of the car, screwed the stand onto the bottom, and left it in the barn. We hadn't actually intended to get a tree today; just the wreaths. We thought we'd wait until Sunday to get things more organized inside for a tree. But Ken had such a terrific selection of smaller trees that we just couldn't resist.
